The mood in Eveline is a sad and confusing. This is established by the flashbacks that Eveline has, there are happy memories something that she has not experienced in a long time, besides the time she spends with Frank. With the flashbacks of her happy past and her depressing future a feeling of pity is brought on by Eveline's thought. Due to the fact that we pity Eveline and her depressing present and future , the tone becomes sad. However, Eveline is given a chance to excape her dank and miserable life and start a new life with Frank. When Frank is introduced in the story things start to become confusing as Eveline goes through a rather hectic thought process weighing the pros and cons of eloping with Frank. Even though living with an abusive father would seem reason enough to run away from home Eveline is kept back in Ireland because of the promise she had made to her mother and the frightening thought of leaving her normal routine.
The effect that this has on the reader is that it shows that Eveline has strong values, as she threw away the chance to go away with Frank, and instead to stay at home with her abusive father. This mood adds to the overall themes of the book, which can be read here.
